Air quality has improved greatly, but further action is needed. Learn about air pollution’s health impacts, ongoing efforts for cleaner air, and how air quality standards, regulations, and local authority teams support further improvement.

Love Clean Air has been created by the Regulatory Services Partnership Air Quality Team, serving Merton, Richmond Upon Thames and Wandsworth councils and supported by partner boroughs.

UNDERSTANDING AIR POLLUTION

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

Air Pollution is often invisible but its impact on our health is real. The main pollutants we focus on are: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Particulate Matter (PM10), and fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5). The good news - small changes can lead to big improvements in our air quality and health.

AIR QUALITY IN MY AREA

Local authorities have a legal duty to monitor certain air pollutants.

Various techniques are used to measure concentrations including automatic monitoring, low-cost sensors and diffusion tubes. Air quality data and the actions being taken by boroughs are reported annually in what’s called an air quality Annual Status Report and published on the council website.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

While overall air quality is improving in London, studies show that pollution we create in the home can be worse than on busy roads.

With people spending about 75% of their time at home, ensuring clean indoor air is crucial, especially for those with health conditions like asthma and COPD who are more vulnerable.

Air Pollution & Health

HEALTH ADVICE

There are many actions we can take, to both reduce our exposure to higher levels of air pollution or reduce our impact, whether that pollution originates outside or inside the home.

EFFECTS ON OUR HEALTH

Air pollution harms every organ and can cause or worsen diseases. Vulnerable groups—older adults, children, pregnant women, and those with heart or lung conditions—face greater risks, underscoring the need for targeted health and environmental protections.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Small lifestyle changes, like altering travel habits and avoiding garden or home burning, can significantly improve air quality and health. Reducing personal exposure and pollution impact is achievable through everyday actions, helping create cleaner, healthier air for everyone.

AIR QUALTY & SCHOOLS

Councils can actively support schools and pupils in tackling air pollution within their boroughs. They deliver tailored engagement activities, helping raise awareness and encouraging practical actions to improve local air quality and protect community health.
