Engine Idling Campaigns at Schools and Hotspots
Engine idling is illegal contributes to harmful nitrogen dioxide and particulate emissions, especially near schools and busy junctions. To tackle this, many councils run idling action events across their boroughs at hotspots such as school gates, railway level crossings, bus stations, and supermarkets. These sessions combine direct engagement with drivers and positive messaging about fuel savings and cleaner air. Community volunteers often join council officers to speak with motorists, explain the health impacts of idling, and encourage simple behaviour changes.
This work forms part of the Pan-London Idling Action Project, which shares best practice, runs city-wide campaigns, and engages logistics companies and driving instructors. While legislation remains weak, we continue to lobby government for stronger enforcement powers. Our aim is to make idling socially unacceptable and reduce exposure to pollution where children and pedestrians are most at risk.
