Healthy Waterways London

The Healthy Waterways initiative is a collaborative project involving 15 London boroughs, the Canal & River Trust, and the Port of London Authority, funded by the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund. Its goal is to improve air quality along London’s canals and rivers, where emissions from boats can create localised pollution hotspots. Research shows many boaters rely on diesel engines and solid fuels such as wood and smokeless coal for heating and cooking, producing harmful PM₂.₅ particles that affect towpath users and nearby communities.

The project works in partnership with the boating community to find practical solutions. Initial phases included surveys and engagement to understand barriers such as cost and limited access to shore power. The next phase will deliver a Clean Air Awareness Campaign, co-designed with boaters, offering advice on cleaner fuels and energy alternatives. Finally, a Healthy Waterways Strategy will set out long-term actions for councils, the Mayor, and partners to reduce emissions, promote sustainable boating, and protect public health. This strategy will ensure London’s waterways remain vibrant, accessible, and environmentally responsible for future generations.
