Cleaner buses for a healthier London

Transport for London is transforming the city’s bus fleet to cut harmful emissions and improve air quality.

All of TfL’s buses meet ULEZ emission standards across the entire city. Their fleet of around 9,000 buses operating across London now meet or exceed Euro VI emission standards, the latest emission standard for vehicles, reducing emissions of nitrogen oxide by up to 90%.

TfL has around 2,500 zero-emission buses operating across the capital, 28% of its entire fleet. This means more than a quarter of buses in London is using zero-emission technology.

Bus operations make up almost 50 per cent of TfL’s operational emissions, with the current emissions from the bus fleet totalling approximately 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. Fully transitioning to zero emission buses will result in annual savings of CO2 equivalent to over 1.4m one-way passenger trips between Heathrow and New York.
