The ULEZ - Cleaning London’s Air
London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is the largest clean air zone of its kind in the World, covering every borough and operating 24/7, year-round. Vehicles that don’t meet strict emissions standards must pay a daily charge, encouraging cleaner transport and reducing harmful pollutants.
Since its expansion in August 2023, the ULEZ has been found to have:
Cut the number of older, polluting vehicles by 58%.
Achieved 97% compliance, meaning most drivers pay nothing.
In Outer London, it has reduced NOx emissions by up to 16% and PM2.5 exhaust emissions by 31%.
Helped lower roadside NO₂ levels by nearly 5% compared to expected trends.
For further details see the evaluation report.
Toxic air contributes to around 4,000 premature deaths annually in London and increases risks of asthma, cancer, and dementia. The ULEZ is a vital step toward cleaner air and healthier lives, with all revenue reinvested into London’s public transport network.
